“In addition to their excellent performance and design, the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge serve as a culmination of our efforts at developing high-tech, environment-friendly products,” said JK Shin, CEO and head of IT & mobile communications at Samsung Electronics. “We will further continue to expand our line of premium eco-products.”

Samsung uses eco-friendly materials for the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge, including 100 percent recyclable packaging paper, recyclable plastic for charger cases, and soy ink free of petroleum solvents for instruction manuals. Samsung has also reduced the use of packaging material by 20 to 25 percent for Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge compared to their predecessors.

Samsung is committed to developing eco-friendly products and established the Eco-Design Process in 2004 and Eco-Product Rating Process in 2009. The Eco-Design Process evaluates the environmental friendliness of products starting at the development stage. This serves as a foundation for the Eco-Product Rating Process, which grades different product models for eco-friendliness.

Detailed certification list:

  • Carbon Certifications: KEITI, Korea; Carbon Trust, United Kingdom; JEMAI, Japan

The Galaxy Note 4 is the first smartphone to gain a low-carbon product certification from the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI). By utilizing high-efficiency production equipment and improving the device’s charging efficiency by nine percent, Samsung has lowered the Galaxy Note 4’s carbon emissions during manufacture and lifetime usage by 1.82 kg per unit compared to the Galaxy Note 2.

In the UK, Carbon Trust honored the Galaxy Note 4 with a CO2 Measured certification. This means that the device successfully meets the requirements of PAS 2050, a global standard for product carbon footprinting.

Finally the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry (JEMAI) certified the Galaxy Note Edge through its Carbon Footprint of Products Program, highlighting the Galaxy Note Edge’s minimal amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Sustainable Product Certification (Platinum): UL, United States

The Galaxy Note 4 received the highest grade Sustainable Product Certification from the U.S.-based safety testing and certification organization, UL (Underwriters Laboratories). The Sustainable Product Certification is issued to products that meet a series of rigorous criteria such as the absence of toxic substances, efficient energy use, product recyclability and packaging, as well as the manufacturer’s socially responsible practices.

  • Vitality Leaf : Ecological Union, Russia

The Galaxy Note 4 received Vitality Leaf certification from the Ecological Union, Russia’s leading environmental certification organization. Vitality Leaf is Russia’s only eco-certification recognized by the international community with the criteria for accreditation requiring the device to have a low level of environmental pollution, high safety and health standards, high levels of recyclable components and a balanced use of natural resources throughout a product’s full lifecycle. Earlier in the year, the Galaxy S5 became the very first product to earn the eco-label in the electronic device category.
