The University of Oxford has unveiled its technology donor as Samsung Electronics UK.  The university’s central research library is currently undergoing extensive renovation and the use of Samsung’s digital technology will bring its extensive archives including rare books and major government documents to “digital life” for members of the public.

As one of the world’s leading technology companies, Samsung will provide state-of-the-art products and bespoke software in eight key areas of the library, enriching the interactive and digital experience within the space. The focus will be on installing digital screens throughout the library, digital signage to realise the library’s digital ambition for its facilities and to help enhance reader resources allowing the general public as well as academics to experience the Bodleian’s unique special collections. Customised technology will support researchers and readers whilst a unique tablet hire service will provide a flexible loan service to suit the mobile needs of visitors.

The project will see development until the end of 2014 with the installation taking place in early 2015, in advance of the grand re-opening of the Weston Library in March 2015.

Andy Griffiths, President of Samsung Electronics UK, comments: “Samsung is delighted to not only be working with the University of Oxford but also to be welcomed to the renowned city, which is synonymous with academic excellence and unrivalled scientific research. Samsung has a long tradition of supporting innovation through its leading edge technology and this is the latest example of how the installation of our products and customised software can sustain our heritage for future generations to come.”

Richard Ovenden, Librarian, said: “Samsung’s generous gift will transform the way that visitors interact with the University of Oxford’s world-class special collections. We are grateful for their professional collaboration and are excited to see how their technology will benefit the students, scholars and members of the public who use the new Weston Library.”

The announcement marks the latest stage in the continuing refurbishment of The Weston Library, which commenced in 2008 with the aim of improving the physical infrastructure and facilities to promote public access to its archives including rare books and major government documents.
