Samsung offers the world’s first Single Radio Voice Call Continuity service commercially

Samsung Electronics announced that for the first time Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) is available to customers. Samsung is the first to make it commercially available starting with customers in Korea, using mobile devices with Samsung Modem Chipset (SHANNON222).

 

SRVCC is a technology that supports voice call handover from packet-switched Voice over LTE (VoLTE) to circuit-switched 3G voice (WCDMA), a legacy circuit domain, when users are out of LTE service coverage areas so a call can continue. Without this service, the VoLTE call is automatically dropped when the user is outside of the LTE coverage range.

 

“Commercial support for SRVCC is a big milestone that will allow LTE Network Operators to start offering high quality VoLTE service even in the early stages of network deployment. Legacy Network Operators considering the transition to the LTE network for enhanced voice and data service will also benefit from today’s announcement as SRVCC enabled LTE does not require ubiquitous LTE coverage on day one of a transition.”

 

Samsung Modem has been the leader in VoLTE and SRVCC commercial services since 2009 by supporting LTE services from Europe, US and Korean operators. The VoLTE feature made available on the GALAXY SⅢ in 2012 was also supported by Samsung Modem.

 

SRVCC is available today in GALAXY S4 LTE (SHV-E300S) as of August 2013.
