Why CES Editors Chose this Samsung Product
At CES 2014, Samsung had many products on display that all seemed to provoke a similar reaction: innovative. Among the many products that CES editors chose at the Samsung booth, there was one product that altered the basic concept that has been followed for close to 150 years, the Chef Collection Dishwasher. Here is why Samsung Tomorrow thinks they chose it.
One Critical Disadvantage of Conventional Dishwashers
For the past 150 years, dishwashers have been based on rotating mechanics. Even in the last 40 years of automatic dishwashers, these also have featured the conventional rotary and circle water sprays on the bottom of the dishwasher. As the red sections of the picture above indicates, the disadvantage of rotary spray is that dishwashers have a square shape and because the spray rotates in circles, the water cannot reach the edges of the dishwasher. This means some of the dishes won’t come out as clean as you want in one cycle. Therefore, you probably have to rerun for another cycle or hand wash them.
How the New Technology Fixed the Problem
The key technology of the Chef Collection Dishwasher is the WaterWall™ technology. With the WaterWall™ technology, the wall of water moves from end to end of the dishwasher and thus leaves no corners behind. Here is how it works.
Instead of the rotating spray, the Chef Collection Dishwasher features two bars: (* one that shoots water and another that deflects it upward.)
1. The water shooter is fixed in the rear of the dishwasher. It has 6 holes, and water is squirted out at high pressure
2. A moving bar (deflector) that glides back and forth, parallel to the water shooter, and reflects the water perpendicularly to its direction, creating a wall of water.
Therefore, the wall of water glides back and forth, projecting water with high pressure throughout the dishwasher, reaching all corners, which is significant improvement from the conventional rotary spray with inevitable missed coverage and blind spots.
At this point, you wonder how the WaterWall maintains its high pressure even when it vertically bounces off of a gliding bar. Instead of the complicated science of physics, here is a real life example for you. The concept of the WaterWall is similar to a snowboarder (the water) gliding and jumping off of a half pipe (the WaterWall). The shape of the half pipe allows the snowboarder to jump high off of the half pipe using its momentum, which is why the gliding bar of the dishwasher is curved, similar to the half-pipe.
Another Twist
On the surface, the WaterWall™ technology seems like a very simple twist to the rotary spray of conventional dishwashers. However, the simple twist has brought an immense improvement to its functionality; and that is not the only twist that Chef Collection Dishwasher features.
The FlexTray™ is rubber linen on the top shelf (3rd rack) of the dishwasher, which allows you to save time organizing utensils and tools. For example, try to remember how tedious it used to be when you had to take out all the knives, forks, spoons or spatulas each one at a time after the washing, which probably made you feel like back in the days when you had to pick up your toys from your room, ALL of them, one by one. FlexTray™ fixed that.
With the FlexTray™ you can simply lay all the utensils or cooking tools on top of the rubber linen, which can cover variety size and shape. To load the cutleries, all you have to do is lay the FlexTray™ on top of the top shelf; and simply lift it off to unload them. Therefore, you don’t need to pick them up one at a time. This will save people a lot of energy and time doing chores.
There are many other things that make the Chef Collection Dishwasher unique to conventional dishwashers. For example, you can target heavily soiled pots and pans on one side (left or right side of the bottom rack) for a high pressure wash, and dishes and glasses on the other side for a gentle wash with lighter water stream. This is possible through the Zone Booster feature, which allows user to adjust water pressure, temperature, and volume setting at the touch of a button. The Soft Rail allows users to have more control over the trays when they are pushing the trays in and out to load and unload dishes.
Innovation is a big word that many people want in their life, because it improves our lifestyles. Therefore, innovation isn’t defined by its scale or complexity, but rather by its effect on our lives. Therefore, a simple twist to conventional methods and improvements on details can also result in innovation. The Chef Collection Dishwasher is a great example of that.
