Samsung Electronics announced today the launch of SeeColors app for QLED TV, which is compatible with all Samsung QLED TVs. The SeeColors app^* for QLED TV helps people with Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) identify their personal visual deficiencies through the app. Based on the individual’s results, QLED TVs, featuring 100% color volume, adjust the color settings on the display, allowing viewers with CVD to enjoy a viewing experience with more optimized colors.

Nearly 300 million people globally have CVD, with approximately 8% of men and up to 1% of women affected^**, based on a representative survey conducted in Europe and North America. However, the majority of people with CVD are unaware of their condition and the impact it has on their quality of life.

Through the SeeColors app on the TV, users can identify the type and level of their CVD then directly recalibrate their QLED TV screen based on their personal results. To offer an easy method for people to identify CVD, Samsung Electronics partnered with Professor Klara Wenzel who heads up the Department of Mechatronics, Optics and Mechanical Engineering Informatics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, to adopt the Colorlite Test, or C-Test, for TV and mobile devices. C-Test, developed by Professor Wenzel, is a digital test that uses the concept of color filters and mathematical modeling to identify CVD. Adopting the C-Test through the SeeColors app has resulted in a simple solution which gives people with CVD the opportunity to see the world through their QLED TVs in more optimized color.

The SeeColors app is available for download from the Smart TV App store. Users can also download the app to conduct the test through Google Play and the Galaxy App Store for Samsung Galaxy smartphones S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S7, S7 edge and S8 devices. Once users connect their Galaxy smartphone to their QLED TV, the TV will automatically adjust the color setting based on the user’s results.

The SeeColors app is created in partnership with Colorlite®, a Hungarian company that applies certified technology based on 20 years of scientific research to lenses to help people address CVD. The SeeColors app marks the first time Colorlite® is being used on TVs and smartphone devices.

Samsung Electronics today announced the Samsung Gear VR with Controller powered by Oculus, the company’s first-ever Gear VR headset with a controller. The Gear VR with Controller expands Samsung’s virtual reality ecosystem and makes it easier for consumers to enjoy Gear VR experiences.

For optimal play and convenience, the Controller features an ergonomic, curved design, offering convenient one-hand control and better motion interaction with minimized head movement for a comfortable user experience. In addition, the Controller provides users with:

Secure Folder leverages the defense-grade Samsung Knox security platform to create a private, encrypted space on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Apps and data moved to Secure Folder are sandboxed separately on the device and gain an additional layer of security and privacy, thus further protecting them from malicious attacks. Furthermore, users must use an authentication method such as PIN, pattern, passcode or biometric verification such as fingerprint authentication to access and manage Secure Folder.

Users may leverage this feature to store and encrypt personal and private content, such as apps, images and documents, and keep them hidden. They can also make copies of their favorite apps and easily access them via alternate profiles. Any notes, photos, contacts or browsing history within the apps stored in Secure Folder will remain separate from the same apps outside Secure Folder.

This is especially useful for those who want to ensure that banking information or apps that store large amounts of personal data stay private when lending out their phones to friends, family members or colleagues.

With a simple design along with easy setup using a Samsung Account, Secure Folder is as convenient as it is secure. Sensitive data can easily be moved to Secure Folder by selecting Move to Secure Folder from native apps such as Gallery, My files, or Contacts, or by tapping Add files inside Secure Folder.

For additional privacy, users can also customize their Secure Folder by changing its name and icon. They can also hide the Secure Folder icon from their home screen altogether using Quick Panel.

Secure Folder also supports cloud-based backup and restore (BnR) to provide users with an easy way to migrate to a new device. Backup data in the Secure Folder is isolated from other general backup files. Therefore, backup data can only be restored through the Settings inside Secure Folder, and only by the original Samsung Account user.

Secure Folder is available for download from Galaxy Apps, and is compatible with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge smartphones supporting Android OS 7.0 or later versions. Samsung plans to extend support to additional devices soon.

Notifications, Performance Mode

Quick Panel and Notifications

The Quick Panel features a cleaner aesthetic, as titles have been removed from the icons in the panel’s first depth. Icons in the second depth are organized into groups of nine, making them easier to locate.

Users can also utilize the integrated S Finder to locate what they want on their smartphone or the web straight from the Quick Panel. Notifications are now grouped to display information more clearly and also support Direct Reply.

Multi Window

An improved controller allows the window size to be more easily adjusted in split screen view. Also, with a new pop-up window function that supports up to five separate windows in addition to the two in the split-screen view, users can access up to seven apps at the same time.

Performance Mode

The newly added Performance Mode lets users optimize their smartphones to better meet their specific needs by activating one of the four available modes. Optimized mode, for example, extends battery life and enhances speed, and is suitable for daily usage, while Game mode provides useful functions such as Game Launcher and Game Tools. Entertainment mode enhances sound and image quality and High Performance mode enables the highest quality display settings possible.

Samsung Pass

Samsung Pass, the feature that works as a master key for website login on Samsung Internet, is now supported on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. Users can use their fingerprint to log into selected websites and apps with Samsung Pass.** The feature will soon be expanded to support mobile banking app integration.

Samsung Electronics has officially announced the release of the seventh color edition of the Galaxy S7 edge: Black Pearl. The glossy new colorway, which radiates quality and luxury, will be exclusive to 128GB versions of the device and debut in select markets on December 9.

The new Black Pearl Galaxy S7 edge follows the Blue Coral and Pink Gold editions released earlier this year. While those were largely inspired by calming, natural hues, Black Pearl was designed to be modern and striking. The sleek black finish blankets the entire device – edges and all – and adds depth to its glass design. The result is a stylish all-black aesthetic that captures the essence of the color in its purest form.

In addition to Black Pearl and the other aforementioned editions, the Galaxy S7 edge is also available in White Pearl, Black Onyx, Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium.

Among the new Game Launcher 2.0 features, Game Discovery provides customized game recommendations based on the user’s gameplay history and preferences, while My Diary analyzes and documents gameplay records.

A new, simplified UI design makes use of a more opaque background to improve menu and icon legibility. Furthermore, non-game app foldering allows users to utilize Game Tools and Game Launcher features in non-game applications by adding them to the Game Launcher folder.

Introduced earlier this year with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, Game Launcher enhances the gaming experience by improving accessibility and maximizing users’ game-playing time through power-saving features. In addition to Game Launcher, Game Tools gives gamers more control over mobile gaming by allowing them to turn off notifications, minimize the game screen, lock the Recent and Back keys, and record and take screenshots of games.

Game Launcher and Game Tools are available on the Galaxy S7, S7 edge, S7 active, Galaxy Note5, Galaxy A8, C5, C7 and C9. In addition, they can be downloaded on the Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+ via Galaxy Apps. The app is available in 185 countries including the US, UK, Germany, China, Japan, Russia and Korea.

Samsung Electronics is offering Galaxy users the opportunity to experience the new features of the Android 7.0 Nougat operating system ahead of its launch through the Galaxy Beta Program.

Starting on November 9, the Galaxy Beta Program has opened to Galaxy S7 and S7 edge* users residing in the U.S., U.K., and Korea, with users based in China being able to participate in the program shortly. Applicants are currently being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Throughout the Galaxy Beta Program period**, users can get a feel for Android 7.0 Nougat*** with Samsung’s latest UX, and can provide feedback on performance, reliability and usability. Users’ responses will in turn help Samsung develop reliable, high-performing software and provide an improved and optimized experience to all Galaxy users.

Users that have an active Samsung Account and meet program requirements may apply for the program by downloading the Galaxy Beta Program app through Galaxy Apps or the Samsung Members app which is available through the Google Play store or Galaxy Apps depending on their country of residence.

The company introduced its first Galaxy Beta Program last year with the launch of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Samsung Electronics has officially released its sixth color edition of the Galaxy S7 edge: Blue Coral. Starting November 1, the Blue Coral Galaxy S7 edge will be available in selected markets around the globe. Specific availability details will be announced by each market’s wireless providers and regional Samsung offices.

The new Blue Coral edition follows this year’s color trends, which are less vivid and more tranquil. Inspired by nature, the color shimmers as if it is illuminated from the inside of the phone’s glass surface.

In particular, Samsung applied a contrasting gold tone hue to the phone’s metallic frame. The resulting two-toned combination is at once calming and sophisticated.

Featuring a sleek design with ergonomic curves, the Galaxy S7 edge incorporates cutting edge mobile technologies that enhance the user experience. Samsung Electronics announced that the Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition is available for purchase in selected regions including Brazil, the United States, China, Germany and Korea from today. In order to celebrate Rio 2016, Samsung made exactly 2,016 phones available in each nation.

As a Worldwide Olympic Partner in the Wireless Communications Equipment section, Samsung first introduced a limited Olympic Games edition device back in 1998, to tie in with the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games. The Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition, however, represents the first time Samsung has released a device with a themed design and even a preloaded Olympic Games-related interface and application.

The Rio 2016-inspired Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition device incorporates Olympic Games-themed design into the phone’s design.

The interactive studios will feature a variety of activities, including enhanced virtual reality experiences where fans can feel the exhilaration of various Olympic sports first-hand.  A new and unique 4D VR offering will be available at select Studios where fans can step outside their comfort zones and into specially designed seats to feel the high-speed thrill of kayaking, a ride that has to be felt to be believed.

Studio visitors will also have the opportunity to collect specially-designed Olympic Games pins, including 22 Olympic Games sport-themed pins, as well as eight sets of special pins designed with symbolic elements of Brazil. The Rio 2016 App: Enhancing the Olympic Games through Innovative Technology

The official application of Rio 2016, “The Rio 2016 App”, developed by Samsung in collaboration with the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee, provides athletes, fans and consumers with 24/7 updates on all of the latest Olympic news. The app will be updated in early August to provide the official Olympic Games schedule, venue and event information, results, medal counts, and more real-time updates. Samsung Galaxy phone users can also use the S-translator customized for the Olympic Games. The Olympic Athletes’ Hub App

The “Olympic Athletes’ Hub” app, developed by the IOC, will be installed on each Olympian device, where they will find relevant information to make the most of their experience at the Olympic Games Rio 2016. With the app, athletes will be able to reach out directly to the IOC and the IOC Athletes’ Commission and can also learn about all the resources and programmes the IOC is making available to athletes.

OpenGL has been an important standard in the industry for more than 25 years. But changes in technology—in particular the rising power of GPUs—have created the need for a new API with more flexibility and portability, which led to the release of Vulkan 1.0 in February. With simpler drivers, Vulkan reduces CPU bottlenecks, allows the use of multiple CPUs for increased performance, and reduces hitches and other surprises.

Compared to OpenGL ES, the Vulkan API increases GPU performance while lowering CPU load. The result is more detailed graphics and more responsive gaming, making games more immersive and engaging for users.

In order to making gaming on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge as exciting and engaging as possible, Samsung has worked actively with its partners, helping them understand the smartphones and Vulkan API.

“Samsung has been a great partner for us in importing our games to Vulkan,” said Tommy Krul, Chief Technology Officer at Super Evil Megacorp. “We actually had engineers from Samsung right here in our office helping us port Vainglory to Vulkan and really squeeze out all the performance we can.”

Together with Samsung and the Vulkan API, Super Evil Megacorp was able to create games with 30 percent faster performance, increased rendering of images on the screen and improved battery life.

“Microsecond fidelity on our devices is essential, because we need players to be able to perform at their max capacity,” said Stephan Sherman, Chief Creative Officer at Super Evil Megacorp. “It’s essential that they have a device that is going to be able to keep up with them. And to take that relationship to the next level, this year Super Evil Megacorp teamed up with Samsung at the E3 to present the Samsung Galaxy Vainglory Invitational tournament Four of the best competitive Vainglory teams from around the world competed in front of a live audience in the 2-day competition. The matches between Team Solomid from USA, G2 esports from Germany, Hunters from China and Invincible Armada from Korea were very intense. In the end, Invincible Armada took home the victory, with Team Solomid coming in at second place.

The Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition comprises a package that includes a sleek, deep-black Galaxy S7 edge, accentuated by gold detailing and an iconic rear seal, inspired by Batman, one of the DC characters featured in the game. But what went into designing the Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition? Senior Designer Kwangmoon Kim, Senior Designer Junwon Lee and Assistant Designer Soohyun Kim in the Mobile business explained the ideas and concepts that went into the game-inspired design.

Q. What was the main concept and principle aim behind the Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition?

Junwon Lee: Our aim was to create a complete package that had a special meaning for Injustice: Gods Among Us game and Batman character fans. It includes a specially designed Galaxy S7 edge, a smartphone case and a Gear VR. The main color we used was black, and we also added a touch of gold.

Q. Why did you choose black and gold?

Junwon Lee: No matter if you are a fan or not, black and gold are the colors that most often come to mind when people think about Batman. The Batman character’s design has continued to change, but the black and gold themes used in Batman in 1990s’ still resonate with many people. We decided that these two colors best matched this edition, and our partner companies agreed.

Soohyun Kim: The logo – a black bat on yellow background – is very well-known. In the Batman movies and cartoons, the Bat-Signal, a yellow searchlight with a black bat emblem is projected onto the night sky as a means of calling Batman. Gold reminds people of the Bat-Signal and we believe the color can be attractive to both fans and non-fans alike.

Kwangmoon Kim: We thought about ways to add the gold-colored elements without altering the image of the new edition. As a result, the package presents a unique look as a whole, with each device piece imbued with a touch of gold.

Q. What are the differences between the Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition and the S7 edge Black Onyx?

Junwon Lee: We wanted to find a unique black hue for the Injustice Edition. The handset mainly consists of two colors: black and gold. Black encompasses the whole body, including the metal frame, unlike the standard Black Onyx version of the S7 edge. This matt-finish black represents Batman’s suit. Gold, on the other hand, was applied on the logo, edge of the home button and rear camera to make them stand out. We examined a number of image samples for the Batman logo on the back, with consideration given to size and dimension, and, following discussions with our partner companies, eventually selected one.

Q. The special edition’s Gear VR and phone case are also unique. What were these items’ main design focus?

Junwon Lee: Our collaboration with the Injustice: Gods Among Us game also led to the creation of the special black version of the Gear VR with a matt finish. The phone case is a reinterpretation of Batman’s suit, and we made an effort to visualize this in a metaphorical sense, rather than make it too obvious. We chose a material that is both comfortable to grip and durable, but that also maximizes the matt texture. The case also needed to combine great looks and optimum protection. We had to make sure it did not compromise the simple beauty of the Galaxy S7 edge by adding too much detail.

Soohyun Kim: I had never really been interested in superheroes, so at first it was hard for me to understand a strong masculine character. However, I soon realized that Batman was not born with superpowers – he is an ordinary person who decided to make the effort to become a superhero. We wanted to showcase his wise and mysterious characteristics on the packaging. Batman uses a variety of gadgets to augment his powers, and we wanted the Injustice Edition package to match with this kind of equipment.

Q. What did you need to consider when you design a product based on a superhero?

Kwangmoon Kim: When we started this project, I was excited about designing the Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition as I enjoyed playing the Injustice game recently, especially with the Batman character in it. We came up with an impression of Batman – a matt-black and solid image – from his characteristics. To turn this idea into a product, though, we needed to bear in mind several considerations. Existing Galaxy S7 edge models had their own shape and a glossy look, and our partner companies have guidelines concerning the use of their superhero characters. We truly examined every elements from every kind of angle to blend them into special, but well balanced.

Junwon Lee: We focused on reflecting the character’s nature and meeting the needs of Batman and Injustice: Gods Among Us game fans. Fans might buy this package edition not just to use its devices, but also so as to own products dedicated to their favorite DC Comics hero. We examined and selected each component of the package from a fan’s perspective and also made proactive suggestions to our partners. The first thing you will see when you open the packaging is a Batman logo badge, which emphasizes the fact that this is a special edition. It is carefully crafted and designed in terms of its size, color and texture. We do not think of this package simply as a way to increase sales. We hope more people will come to appreciate the Samsung and Galaxy brand through our fresh approach and this special edition’s emotional appeal.

Q. Do you recall any stand-out episodes you experienced during the design development?

Kwangmoon Kim: In order to realize the black design for the Galaxy S7 Injustice Edition, we had to work hard and cooperate with other teams. For instance, we had to secure specific set of equipment from existing manufacturing facilities to produce the black metal frame for the special edition. We also had to make numerous attempts to adjust the color and texture to fit with the design. In order to create a totally black look, we even made the slit on the metal frame that provides better antenna performance in black.

Soohyun Kim: I was at a library one day when a book about the history of superhero stories caught my attention, even though I had never really been interested in the subject. I read the book attentively. A few days later, I ended up getting involved in this project – an amazing coincidence. During the production phase, I also learned a lot of things that as a designer I had previously not known about. At the production facility, I could see how important it is be precise and accurate when you are making a quality product. Even a small scratch on the box, a minute color difference or a tiny error in the size of the tray inside the packaging is unacceptable. I learned that great design quality comes from cooperation between different departments, not just from designers themselves.

Samsung Electronics introduced the largest Galaxy S7 edge in Europe, mega-sized LED signage—80 meters high and 40 meters wide, in Sokol, Moscow.

The Galaxy S7 edge LED signage can be spotted from as far as Moscow’s Gidroproekt building which is located 2.2 kilometers from the site. The LED signage is situated on the side of main road that connects downtown Moscow and Sheremetyevo International Airport, an area that sees approximately 800,000 people per day,

Following record pre-orders in Europe for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, Samsung Electronics Europe today announced an exclusive Gear VR content package for new Galaxy S7 customers.

For a limited period only*, new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge customers in Europe will be able to purchase the Samsung Gear VR, powered by Oculus, at a special price and get free access to exclusive premium games and experiences, available from the Oculus Store. 2016: Analysts Predict a Year of VR Growth  

Industry analyst house CCS Insight forecasts that revenues for VR headsets globally will reach $10bn by 2020, with Western Europe accounting for $3bn. 4.7mn headsets are expected to be shipped in Western Europe in 2016, with value-priced smartphone VR headsets such as the Gear VR expected to account for 90% of the volume.

1. Customizable App Shortcuts on Lock Screen

When the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are locked, two apps can be placed in the lower corners for easy access. Choose the apps you use the most—whether the camera, phone, photo gallery, S Health or even third-party apps—and the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge can provide you with faster access.

2. Multiple Lock Screen Images

For your Lock screen’s wallpaper, you can now select multiple images from your Gallery to change the look each time you check your lock screen. It allows you to choose up to 30 images.

In addition, if you long press the display while the lock screen is on, the time and other information on the display disappear leaving only the wallpaper image. That allows you to see your lock screen image without interference from any on-screen information.

3. More Ways to Manage Apps from Home Screen

With the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, you can now easily move apps around your home screens and search for apps more simply.

To move icons to different Home screens, long press an icon, and then drag it to the Move apps icon on the upper right. The Move apps is a temporary container for managing several applications at once. Then tap or drag it to move it to another page.

In addition, you can look for an app by name in the app tray by selecting “Search” at the top of the screen.

4. Show All Apps on Home Screen

Usually downloads all go to an app tray, but if you don’t like that way of organizing them, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge give you an alternative method. Choosing “Show all apps on home screen” gets rid of the app tray, and moves all the apps to the Home screens.

5. Identify Unsaved Callers 

When you receive a call from a number not in your address book, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge can check to see if that phone number is suspected of being a spammer or even a fraud-related number, and what the risk level is. Depending on that analysis, you can choose to block or report the number.

6. Display Scaling

Display scaling lets you optimize the DPI (Dots Per Inch) settings of your display. You can either choose to stay as Standard or change to Condensed. Condensing your display lets you view more content on the screen at one time with smaller icons, controls, and text.

7. Icon Backgrounds

For the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, the look of the icons has been updated to be more unified and natural. For native apps, the icons all come in a “squircle” shape (a square with rounded edges), creating a pleasing and organized appearance. For third-party apps, users can turn on the Icon background, which creates a squircle container background for all those icons, too, unifying the look of all of a user’s apps. In addition, many icons now offer two different styles—a traditional flat look, and a more 3D look.

8. Schedule Auto Restart

Often restarting a device is one of the best ways to keep it running efficiently, as it clears out the system and ensure new apps and updates are operating properly. Auto restart ensures that your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge gets a regular restarting, so you don’t have to worry about remembering to do it manually. The function also takes care to prevent restarting from happening at inconvenient times, so it only occurs when the screen is turned off and the device is not in use, but there is at least 30 percent of the battery power remaining.

Now you can check on notifications, missed calls, the time, date and more without ever unlocking your display. Always On Display puts that information right on your screen, freeing you from activating your display to check them, and without draining your battery.

10. Cross App

With Cross App, you can use apps from within certain other apps. For example, while chatting with a friend in the Messages app, you can access photos and videos and share them, or open a URL and check out a web page, all without exiting the messenger first.

Cross App is automatically integrated with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. When using the Messages app, just click on the paperclip icon on the left of the Enter message panel. That gives you the choice of Camera, Gallery or Other. Camera lets you take photos or record video and send it directly to the person you are chatting with. Gallery lets you select photos and videos saved on your device. Other offers a range of apps, including Audio, Voice recorder, Memo and more.

11. Game Launcher

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are gamer-friendly devices, and both come with an app that makes gaming even better. Game Launcher lets you maximize your game-playing time through a variety of power-saving options. You can also turn off all notifications so nothing interrupts your gaming and lock the Recent and Back keys to prevent accidentally exiting a game. In addition, you can also take screen shots, record games and share them with friends.

Smart Switch, which makes it easy to transfer your old data to a new Galaxy device, has gotten an upgrade for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, with a new home layout, better app data recovery, and other improvements. Quick Dial makes calling your contacts faster and easier. Once enabled, you just need to give the home key a long press (even if the display is off), and then speak the name of the person you want to call. Quick Dial takes care of the rest. This is a function only on the Galaxy S7 edge model. Just as People edge puts your most important contacts right into the curved edge screen for easy access, and Apps edge does the same for your favorite apps, Tasks edge lets you assign a shortcut for your most common tasks. Setting an alarm, composing a text message or creating an event can be assigned to the edge of the display, for fast, easy access.

Recognizing the growth of the mobile gaming industry and increasing influence of millennial mobile users, Samsung launched a Task Force Team (TFT) dedicated to gaming in 2015.

“Our task force team was not formed under the decision by management,” said Principle Engineer Dong Kyung Kim. “People who really love games came together voluntarily.”

The team was comprised of experts from different groups across Samsung – from Technology Strategy and Service Product Management to Graphic R&D and UX to Product Planning and Marketing. Together, the team members used their different expertise to create synergies and solve various challenges throughout the development process. As a result, they bolstered the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge with specialized features for mobile games – demonstrating the company-wide move toward providing a more convenient and comfortable gaming experience for users.

Subtle Features That Make a Huge Difference

The more notable gaming features of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are the Game Launcher and Game Tools. While the Game Launcher allows you to be immersed in the game by showing every mobile game related feature in one screen, the Game Tools increases concentration by offering on-screen buttons for game-related functions.
These two apps are pre-loaded on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge but not activated automatically. Since these features are not essential for non-gamers, interested users need to activate them in ‘Settings > Useful features > Game’.

The ‘Do not disturb’ feature of the Game Launcher is receiving positive response from avid gamers. When it is activated, the phone blocks notifications and calls and disables some basic buttons.

“Locking the back button during a game may seem insignificant for non-gamers, but for gamers it’s a massive change,” said Senior Designer Joon Won Park. “Every gamer has probably experienced a loss in game progress from an unintentional touch of the back button.”

The team also added a live-stream feature that records games and provides live-streams using the Game Tools, without the help of a separate app.

“The number of people who watch live stream of the final game for ‘League of Legend’ is more than the number of people who watch the final game of American professional baseball,” said Senior Manager Taehoon Kim. “Millennials who record games as they play are likely to live-stream the game as well. The boundaries within the gaming experience keep expanding.”

Samsung offers a Galaxy Game Pack to Galaxy S7 and S7 edge users through the Samsung Galaxy App Store. Packed with more than 40 of the world’s favorite games, its monetary value is more than $200.

“We created the Galaxy Game Pack because we wanted a way to let more Galaxy users know about the Galaxy S7’s gaming features,” said Manager Junsik Kim. Offering the games to users was a first step for the developers in getting user feedback and finding out their satisfaction levels with the gaming features.

Creating a Mobile Gaming Ecosystem

Beyond the improvement of graphics and the addition of enhanced gaming features on the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, the developer team aim to build a mobile game ecosystem. To achieve this goal, the team recognizes the need for collaboration with other companies and game developers, and demonstrated its efforts at the Game Developers Conference 2016 (GDC), the largest game developer conference.

“When I was at the GDC conference, I felt that people were wondering why Samsung was here,” said Principle Engineer Jung Woo Kim. “Once they understood our vision and saw our efforts, they understood Samsung’s commitment to enhancing the gaming experience.”

The company upgraded the smartphone’s graphics module in order to run high-spec games on it. That’s how the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are equipped with the next-generation graphic API, Vulkan. Cooperation with other companies was also vital during this process.

“Although we have the capability in-house to develop the product and service based on the new API, we could more effectively work together with others under the same goal,” said Principle Engineer Ted Choi.

Vulkan is the first graphics tool that supports desktop, console and mobile devices with a single API. It significantly reduces CP workload, which helps to reduce power consumption while still creating great graphical effects. Vulkan also has the potential to unify and expand the game eco system across various platforms and will contribute to the accelerated adoption of open standards.

As expected, many gamers found interest with the Vulkan games. “We will try our best to release as many Vulkan games as we can within 2016,” Jung Woo Kim said.

Faster Access and Organize What You Need

Launch apps in an instant from the lockscreen with the App Tray feature and get up-to-date with app information quicker than ever. Just pull the App Tray handle up from the bottom of the screen to reveal an area where you can keep shortcuts to frequently accessed apps. Use the Edit and Add buttons to select or remove apps.

With the Lockscreen Widget, you can see the information of your choice quickly without unlocking the screen. When you drag down the widget area (below the clock on the screen), you can see a list of widgets and set, edit or add to the list.

In addition, you can organize Notifications from the lockscreen: save, categorize and get reminders.

If you see a notification you need, simply long press it to sort it into a category. Save notifications using Keep, allowing you to check app alerts later, or touch the alarm button to set yourself a reminder.

Routine: Interfaces that Adapt to Your Environment

Routine lets you customize your lockscreen layout, your App Tray, Lockscreen Widget, background colors and clock so your Galaxy device looks just the way you want, when you want. This allows you to fill your App Tray with productivity-enabling apps during work hours, but switch to a Routine with entertainment-orientated apps in the evening—and pick color schemes that match your moods.

Other Exciting Features

There are more benefits to using Good Lock. Recents lets you scan through a list of recently used apps, and enjoy faster transition between your applications using the app icon.

Meanwhile, if you feel like giving your lockscreen a facelift, Effects lets you adjust your wallpaper, add or adjust popping colors and highlight parts of the screen you want to make stand out.

Q. How is the cooling system of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge different from conventional technology for smartphone thermal radiation?

Kyungha Koo: Using smartphones applications such as games and videos requires the hardware to perform at high levels and therefore generate heat. When the temperature reaches a certain point, the application processor (AP) decreases clock rates to prevent excessive heat build-up. Therefore, many researches have been conducted to figure out how to effectively radiate heat from smartphone devices during use.

The most important part of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge’s cooling system is the thermal spreader (Heat Pipe). We adopted a spreader that is only 0.4mm in diameter, making it the thinnest in the market today. Unlike the conventional thermal spread sheet technology, the thermal spreader uses changes in the phases of water to radiate heat. It has a porous structure on the inside where water absorbs heat, turns into steam and moves through pipes. After losing heat, the steam liquefies, and turns back into water in the structure. This continuous cycle dispels heat. Generally, its thermal conductivity is more than 50 times higher than that of copper. The entire process happens inside the small space that is only 0.2mm wide.

Q. Why did you embed the cooling system?

Jeonggyu Jo: The latest Galaxy S7 and S7 edge have a high performance AP and enabling extended use of these features concerned us. To disperse more heat effectively, we embedded the thermal spreader. This ensures high performance of smartphones and also lessens surface heat at the same time.

Q. Did you have to adjust the development process due to the cooling system?

Sanghyun Yi: Throughout the smartphone development process, the controlling heat remains an important focus for us. In order to introduce a new feature to smartphones, the hardware and software have always been subject to change and adjustment during development. Accordingly, the thermal radiation method always changes and is adjusted during development.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were designed to optimize the cooling system from the start. This is a new approach. The related R&D divisions and departments shared a common goal to effectively maximize the use of the cooling system. After much research, we were able to launch a smartphone that minimizes excessive heat from the device which causes discomfort to users.

Q. Does this cooling system continue to work while the smartphone is in use?

Haejin Lee: The cooling system continues to work while the smartphone is in use. An easier way to think of it is that the cooling system acts like a network of roads. When there is no traffic, you can use regular roads, but if there is traffic congestion, highways are useful to spread out the traffic volume. The thermal spreader spreads out excessive heat, preventing the smartphone from overheating.

Q. How effective is the cooling system to controlling heat?

Jo: The cooling system is in fact the hardware thermal spread solution. However, due to the spatial limits of smartphones, the cooling system’s cooling capacity alone is not enough to cool the device. We need to calculate the amount of electric current and optimize the heat control algorithm to minimize occurring heat. In other words, the new thermal spreader hardware controls the heat more effectively but the software heat-control algorithm must be made compatible to ensure best performance.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are the first to implement the latest cooling system, so we thoroughly evaluated whether the system would affect other circuits or the performance of other functions while cooling down the device. Additionally, since the cooling system required new technical components, we worked closely with related teams to ensure the device remained cost effective to our customers.

Q. How did you get the ideas for the cooling system and its compositions?

Koo: There were three major ways. First, we improved conventional thermal conductive materials by working closely with partners. We also applied the thermal solution to not only smartphones, but wearable devices, cameras, tablets, PCs and other products. So another way to improve the system is to execute cross-platform reference on thermal solutions applied to different devices and optimize its performance. In that process, we sometimes make an entirely new thermal solution for a certain product. Last but not least, testing out new materials is an indispensable part, so through diverse channels like our internal laboratory and external academic circles, we collected information and conducted reviews for potential use in our products.

Q. What was the most difficult aspect of developing the cooling system?

Lee: There were many technical challenges during the development phase, including the challenge of actually installing the cooling system without altering the overall slim design of the smartphone. We couldn’t find an existing thermal spread that was as thin as we wanted, so we set out to develop our own. Since this was our first time implementing a thermal spreader, we had to go through a trial process to figure out the best standards to measure the system’s effectiveness. However, in the end, we were able to successfully develop a thermal spreader and received positive feedback from consumers.

Yi: Another challenge was cutting a groove on the bracket to install the cooling system. The larger the cooling system, the larger the groove required to house it – and a large groove can compromise the strength of the device. However, we eventually, came up with a perfect place that was big enough to house the cooling system yet maintained the strength of the device. As a result, the thermal spreader in the Galaxy S7 is 30% bigger than the original design.

With the Auto camera mode of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, you can produce optimal photographs without having to further adjust the camera’s settings. This rings true in all lighting conditions, even in low-light and backlit environments, and requires only a tap of the shutter button.

However, should you want to spice things up with a bit of flair, there are plenty of new and improved functions and modes that add style and originality to photographs and videos. These features not only add a new element of fun, but are easy to use. Find out how below.

Pro Mode: Get Technical with It

For those more versed in the technicalities of photography, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge′s Pro mode lets users dial things in DSLR-like fashion, with control of exposure, shutter speed, ISO and white balance to more accurately produce one’s desired results.

Also, by applying its new Dual Pixel technology, Samsung enabled a Multi AF function on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge that offers responsive and fast autofocus performance under all lighting conditions.

Food Mode: Full-Flavored Photos

Previously only available through download, Food mode now comes pre-installed on the latest Galaxy devices. Because who doesn’t love snapping and sharing images of their lunch with the world? Use it to take drool-worthy images that emphasize the vivid colors of intricate desserts, “homemade” meals and artisanal cocktails.

More Fun with Motion Panorama

With the all-new Motion Panorama mode, conventional still panorama shots are brought to life by capturing moving objects.

For example, during a hike, you can capture not only a panoramic view of the mountains, but also the movements of trees swaying in the wind and birds flying through the frame. Likewise, use it at a soccer stadium to capture an active, wide angle view of the big game. After all, it’s these little moments that make such experiences memorable.

• In Camera, select MODE > Panorama.
• At the top of the screen, tap the Motion On icon. Select On.
• Tap the Camera button and take a panoramic shot by moving the device in one direction.
• To view the video clip, locate the image in Gallery.
• Tap the Motion Panorama icon at the top right of the screen.
• Tilt your phone or swipe the screen to interactively view the animated image.
• You can share Motion Panorama as a video file or an image file.

Motion Photo: Moments On the Move

The same motion effect can also be applied to standard images. By enabling Motion Photo, you can record a short video clip of the brief action leading up to the captured moment. Or, in the case that you don’t press the shutter at the right second, you can extract the best frame from the video, and share or print it. This is especially handy for capturing those time-sensitive moments, such as baby’s first steps or the grand finale at a fireworks show.

• In Settings, select Applications > Camera.
• Turn on Motion Photo.
• In Camera, tap the Camera button and take a photograph as you normally would.
• To view the video clip, locate the photograph in Gallery.
• Tap the Motion Photo icon at the top right of the screen.

Hyperlapse: Go Full Speed

The Hyperlapse mode in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge has been vastly improved in terms of image quality, stability and visibility compared to the former Fast Motion mode. Hyperlapse automatically selects stabilized frames by analyzing the recorded video, changing the video speed according to the movement of the scene, and compressing it to a shorter format.

So, whether you want to capture a seaside sunset or a neighborhood walk-through, Hyperlapse is the way to do it.

• In Camera, select MODE > Hyperlapse.
• Tap Record button. (The time displayed in parenthesis on the right side shows the actual time of recorded footage, while the time on the left shows the length of the video after the Hyperlapse effect is applied.)
• Tap Stop icon and save.

Pick a Mode, Any Mode

In addition to the previously mentioned default modes, you can also add other modes by selecting Download at the top of the MODE menu.

Dual Camera mode is one example. While the previous version only displayed the photographer and photographed subject in the same still image, the upgraded version now uses multitracking to allow for simultaneous video recording from the front and rear cameras. Both videos can then be applied to a single screen to create one single video clip.

• In Camera, select MODE > Dual Camera.
• Tap the Dual Camera icon at the top of the screen. Select your preferred shape and drag it to your selected location on the screen.
• Tap the Camera button to take a picture or the Record button to take a video.
• To view, locate the video (or still image) in Gallery, then tap the Dual Camera icon.
• At the bottom of the screen of the video, choose Single view, where you can switch back and forth between the recorded videos, or Dual view to watch them both at the same time. (Still images can only be viewed one at a time.)

Not only have the features and filters of the newest Galaxy mobile cameras been updated, but the camera UI has, as well. Youngho Seo and Seonyoung Park of the Mechanical R&D, and SeungChul Choi and Chulwoo Park of the Advanced Component Technology, explained what elements went into creating an optimized battery environment and experience for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, and the challenges of working to balance the three most important elements of the battery usage triangle – efficient and larger battery size, extended running time, and faster and safer charging.

Q. What are some of the challenges of developing smartphone batteries?

Youngho Seo: Customers often feel that their battery on their smartphone is not enough — they want it to last longer. Although it should be possible to increase battery capacity to meet the user’s expectations, there are technical difficulties at play that make it difficult to do so. Finding ways to overcome these obstacles is the toughest challenge in battery development.

Seonyoung Park: Another challenge in battery development is the long trial period. Smartphone batteries have to be tested for many years in order to prove they deliver the same performance, even after hundreds of recharges. This obviously takes a long time.

Q. What did you focus on the most in working to improve the battery of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge?

Youngho Seo: A key focus was to improve the battery’s energy density, which is the amount of energy stored in a specific size of a physical space. We were determined to design a battery with increased capacity—but without adding any bulk—in order to preserve the Galaxy S7’s compact design. As a result, higher energy density was applied to the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, equipping both phones with battery capacities of 3,000mAh and 3,600mAh respectively.

Q. What other steps were taken to increase the battery running time of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge?

Seungchul Choi: In order to extend battery life, it is crucial to have both a larger power storage capacity and minimal electricity consumption rate-per-hour. Power consumption will increase unless battery usage is optimized by adding components like the smartphone chipset design to its application. To extend the Galaxy S7’s battery life, we worked across the many departments that led the development of the Galaxy S7 at every stage — from planning to verification. When too much energy was used while developing new features, we conducted thorough reviews and worked together on solutions to provide the same function while consuming less energy.

In addition, various options were introduced to the new phone to reduce energy consumption, such as the App power saving feature, which is a function that lets users set a specific time during which the application is inactive and can save power within the Smart Manager.

Q. Have you made any improvements to the battery to reduce the charging time?

Chulwoo Park: Samsung has provided a fast-charging feature since 2014 when we launched the Galaxy Note4. When the Galaxy S6 launched last year, we added algorithms to enhance stability during fast charging. In the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, the usability has been improved even further with the addition of a new algorithm for longer battery life.

The fast charging technology needs to not only save time – but do it safely. We do this by ensuring that there is no excess electricity inflow through the product other than the amount required for charging. This is possible through bilateral communication, which monitors the power charging levels between the device and charger. In addition, safety features inside the charger protect the smartphone and battery against possible issues such as dirt, or water interference.

Specifically, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge have a seven-step safety feature that is applied to the charger and battery to enhance consumer protection.

Q. Since the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are water and dust resistant, would it be safe to charge them when they’re wet?

Chulwoo Park: For safety purposes, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge have an ID pin in the USB port that will detect that the device is connected to the charger. If a foreign substance like water is sensed by the ID pin, the charger will not work. It is recommended that phones are kept free from moisture and any other foreign substance before charging.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are designed with an intuitive feel and uniform screen that maintain Samsung’s design heritage. The new user experience (UX) includes Always On Display that enables users to check time and notification with ease, enhanced use of messaging with minimized interference of other apps and one-touch shortcuts that increase functionality. With improved processing ability and software, the phones were designed with users’ needs in mind.

The UX designers of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge explained the many design changes of the device and how they see these changes improving the user experience.

Q. What differentiates the UX in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge?

Sangdeuk Nam: These phones are designed with special features that reflect the actual needs, usage patterns and experience of the users. In particular, the new UX includes refinements to the clock and weather information on the home screen, an app search within the app tray – making for a faster app search.

Hyosang Bang: As we designed the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, we aimed the entire process of using the phone –taking it out of one’s pocket, using it and putting it back in one’s pocket – is one effortless flow of motion and experience. Through features such as the Always On Display, improved connectivity between messages, and quick access through the edge screen, the phones are designed to provide information in an intuitive and handy way.

Q. What is the Always On Display (AOD) and how do you expect users to benefit from this feature?

Jieun Yang: Through our research, we were able to see that users repeatedly turn the phone display on and off throughout the day just to check the time. The Always On Display allows users to check important information like time without turning on the screen and we expect improved user satisfaction from this feature.

To personalize their device, we also have developed themes like space, and many more, that users can download for AOD. The favorite theme will be applied throughout the device, including the clock and image on the home screen and will be continuous on the turned-on screen and the turned-off screen.

Q. What is the Smart Switch, and how will it benefit users?

Sang-a Eun: Some users are reluctant to change their phones because of the difficulty and inconvenience of moving data from one device to another. By using the Smart Switch, a service that allows users to easily send personal data from an old to a new device, users will have no trouble maintaining all previous experiences –even between various devices like a phone and tablet.

The users are able to transfer data from the previous device using a USB connector or by executing it in the setting menu of the device. To allow new users to easily and quickly send data themselves, we have explained the data transmission processes through image and infographic depicting the data transmission stage.

Q. What is notable about the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge messaging interface?

Hyojin Bae: The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge messaging are a trendier version of Legacy messaging and are intended to be used the same way as instant messaging (IM). We designed it to have Cross-app functionality, meaning that users can perform various activities using one particular app without moving around to different apps.

Sukjae Lee: For instance, if a user receives a web link in a text message, email, or memo app, they can use a web viewer to check the link in the same screen without exiting the app he or she was using. Also, the user can easily send attachments, like images, videos, music, memos, schedules, contact, and more, through a separate Attach Sheet interface.

Q. What is notable about the Sound & Haptic system in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge?

Youngku Lee: The main focus in developing the audio ux was also the “consideration for users”. For example, we changed the low battery alert sound to be a more pleasant and relaxing auditory experience.

One example is the Galaxy devices’ signature sound – “Over the Horizon”. For the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, a fresh interpretation of the song has been uploaded in an exciting Fusion jazz style, a music genre that we think exemplifies the feeling of consideration.

Q. What are the improvements in UX for the enhanced edge function?

Donggyu Lim: The edge UX allows more efficient access to the routine tasks that are most frequently used. The biggest improvement is that the edge can be summoned on any screen without having to press a certain button. Also, the edge domain has been expanded so that users can check the news or scores for a particular sports team, right away. We also improved the shortcut function so that the user’s most frequently contacted person, most frequently used app, or the most frequently used function can be added and summoned on any screen.

Q. Is there a possibility for the edge UX advancement in the future?

Jonghyun Han: Samsung has released its third edge model and is also continuously advancing edge UX. In addition to the edge functions that we have prepared, there are even more functions being distributed through the SDK for use by third party app developers.

In the future, we expect that there will be an increase in more diverse services and functions through the expanded scope of the edge. Opportunities for messenger services, various news providers, and O2O services are wide open as well.

Samsung began developing the function in earnest about three years ago, based on two of users’ biggest needs: the ability to check information quickly and to differentiate themselves from other users. But there were multiple factors that needed to be considered. One of the most pressing ones was power consumption.

Decreasing Power Consumption from the Inside Out

The AMOLED display of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge was beneficial for implementing the AOD in the first place, because the black pixels of an AMOLED display actually are turned off, and thus consume less power.

Despite this advantage, other components, such as the Display Driver IC (DDI), the Application Processor (AP) and various sensors still consume power.

From among these components, the DDI consumes the most power. To implement the AOD in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, Samsung reduced power consumption in sleep mode to less than one-fifth of previous rates. It’s almost half the power consumption of the Night Clock feature on the previous model, which uses only the edge screen of the display.

Samsung also applied Smart Power Saving, a new hardware algorithm, to further improve the performance of the DDI of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

Through this, the company was able to separate the power needed for the DDI in normal activity mode and that needed for the AOD at the hardware level. That is to say, it is like how a car driver chooses 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive depending on road conditions in order to use the engine power in the most efficient way.

Power consumption rates vary depending on the information users want to check via the AOD. The display only uses eight colors when it displays simple information, including the time and date. If more images or colors are to be displayed on the screen, then bit depth is increased to 16 million colors, requiring a little more power. This change happens automatically and seamlessly by AOD software and hardware in a harmonious way.

A Display That Responds to You and Your Surroundings

Samsung also reduced the power consumption by decreasing the frame rate. Compared to the phone’s normal mode, the AOD uses fewer frames per second—the number of times the image on the screen is refreshed per second. It’s because the AOD displays a relatively small amount of information compared with the phone’s normal mode. Nevertheless, Samsung determined an optimal number of frames to ensure that there was no compromise in display quality.

The new AOD feature ensures that users can check information at any time, but special proximity, RGB light and accelerometer sensors work to automatically disable the AOD in situations when users are unable to see the screen, such as when the phone is in a pocket or a bag.

These sensors also help to adjust the brightness of information displayed on the AOD in the same way that the display’s brightness is automatically fine-tuned according to light levels in the users’ surroundings.

Of course, users have the option to enable or disable the AOD, and should the phone’s battery level reach less than 5 percent, the AOD automatically turns off.

Samsung has tried to provide a more immersive viewing experience with its AMOLED displays. But now, the company has taken things to the next level with a new feature that distinguishes the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, even when its screen is on standby.

Quick Dial is easy to toggle on (Settings → Advanced Features → Galaxy Labs → Quick Dial). Once enabled, you can access the feature by a long press of the home key from any screen, even when the display is off. If your phone is locked with fingerprint, you can use Quick Dial after unlocking the phone.

Like the camera Quick Launch, which you can access by pressing the home button twice, Quick Dial launches in mere seconds.

Once launched, the feature clearly prompts you to speak the name of the person you would like to call (“John Smith,” for example). Other natural verbal commands also work (such as: “Please call John Smith” or “Dial John Smith”).

Unlike conventional voice recognition systems, which send spoken commands to servers for processing, Quick Dial uses hybrid processing via servers, as well as the device itself. As such, the system is able to make a call within three seconds of receiving a voice command. The system allows ensures the phone makes voice calls within three seconds of receiving a voice command. In the case of individuals with has a high number of contacts, users may have to repeat their voice command two or three times in order to place their call.

If you have multiple contacts with the same name, or multiple phone numbers saved under the same contact name in your Contacts database, the phone will give you a list of potential recipients and prompt you to select the contact or number you are trying to dial.

The feature also uses machine learning. That means it becomes more familiar with your voice and calling habits over time, thus improving in functionality the more often you use it.

Even contacts that contain special symbols or characters can also be recognized by just speaking the text portion of the name. For example, “Jane Smith@Samsung” can be recognized by simply vocalizing “Jane Smith” while “Wife♡” can be spoken as “Wife.”

If you suddenly decide not to call someone after making a Quick Dial voice request, or realize you have selected the wrong contact number, you can cancel the call by pressing the “x” button.

Gone are the days of scrolling through endless contacts, or getting frustrated with poorly-functioning voice recognition software—Quick Dial is intuitive and user-friendly, which makes it easy for anyone to make a phone call in seconds, no matter what life has in store. Quick Dial can currently be used in 15 languages including English, Spanish, Chinese and French.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are designed to be water and dust resistant, so that it can join you wherever you go – through rain or shine. The new feature solves one of the biggest pain points of mobile devices, yet developing this innovative technology and applying it in a way that maintained Samsung’s design heritage was no easy feat.

Suk Chul Park and Jong Min Choi, senior engineers of the Mechanical R&D, Mobile Communications Business, explained what went into developing the device’s water and dust resistant feature, as well as the challenges and rewards that came along with the process.

Q. What differentiates a water and dust resistant phone from other devices on the market?

Jong Min Choi: Normally, when a mobile phone is exposed to water, the liquid leaks into the body, eroding its hardware and causing electrical shorts. These phones are designed with special materials or tapes that safeguard them when they are exposed to small amounts of water. However, these measures cannot protect them against larger quantities of water.

In contrast, water and dust resistant phones are equipped with a more advanced technology that prevents moisture from reaching their inner workings. This technology allows people to use the phone safely, even in very wet environments.

Q. What is most notable about the water and dust resistant features of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge?

Suk Chul Park: Most other water and dust resistant phones come with bulky detachable covers or a clunky design, but the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge offer excellent protection without sacrificing the aesthetics of the phone.

To ensure exceptional water and dust resistance, we conducted rigorous experiments to find the right materials to seal the device’s USB port without using protective caps. We were looking to do this without compromising the devices’ compact look and feel.

It is definitely not easy to apply the water and dust resistant feature to s mass-produced flagship smartphone, but to design a metal-body phone without a cap was a huge challenge as well.

Q. What technology did you use to accomplish this?

Choi: To start, we looked at making potentially vulnerable parts more water and dust resistant. Non-corrodible materials like Nickel and Platinum were selected for frequently used parts such as an USB port or an earphone jack, not to harm the functionality.

Another point was to use special elastic material during assembly for sealing to block the moisture. When assembling individual parts like USB port, earphone jack or SIM card tray, there has to be a slight hiatus. Special silicon-type material is used to close that gap to prevent water from getting into the phone.

Q. What unique development challenges did you have to tackle when making the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge?

Choi: Finding the right liquid-sealing material was probably the biggest challenge. We needed a material that was fairly solid to repel water, but also flexible enough to function as a sealant.

We also needed it to be easily removable to allow people to make repairs to the device, and also to ensure it would not be affected by temperature and humidity changes. Finding the right materials involved a lot of trial and error.

Park: One of those efforts was to apply water and dust resistant feature within the limited bezel space in order to maintain its size.

In particular, the Galaxy S7 edge has an extremely narrow bezel and curved display which made it impossible to apply water protective tape around the edge. To maintain and highlight the curved display of the Galaxy S7 edge, a different approach was needed. The material and location of the water protective tape were changed and liquid sealing material was used for the curvy area and to connect the taped part. Also, curved display itself is made up with water resistant material.

Q. What did you need to do to enable functionality without negatively affecting the devices’ aesthetic appeal?

Park: Through our research, we were able to develop ultra-thin water protective tape that provides high levels of water and dust resistance. We also developed a special sealant that can protect against water in both flat and curvy parts of the devices.

Special connection technology was also used to seal the space between the device’s metal frame and plastic parts for the antenna placement, replacing the plastic resin method used in previous devices. We also used non-corrodible materials and an erosion-free coating to protect the exposed parts of the device from humidity.

Q. Is it possible to use the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge underwater? Can users take them to the waterpark or the beach?

Choi: It won’t present any problems if you use these devices under fresh water for a short time, but it is recommended that you do so according to the product specifications. In fact, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are certified with an IP68 rating, which is the highest rating available for water and dust resistance of electronic appliance. However, ratings do not guarantee a device’s performance beyond the specified depth of water, or in liquids other than water.

We would recommend against using the phones for longer periods of time under high-pressure water taps, or in the ocean or other saltwater environments.

Q. What was the most significant moment for you personally during the development process?

Park: In the very first water and dust resistance tests, we actually failed a lot more than we succeeded. People from just about every department watched our tests, so it was a bit embarrassing. Some were skeptical about applying water-resistant features to the phones, but we saw a lot of hope in the success cases, and soon began to weed out the problems one by one until we finally got to IP68 standard.

Choi: We conducted so many experiments with so many materials that I started to have dreams about testing the devices! Ensuring durability for a device as uniquely designed as the Galaxy S7 devices was obviously going to be tough, but everyone was excited about the challenge. When the phones were revealed to the public, it was rewarding for us to see such an enthusiastic response to their water and dust resistance.

The Galaxy S7 is the first phone to ever use dual pixel technology and the results make it a worthwhile change for Samsung. We caught up with our experts to find out what happened behind the scenes to enable the Galaxy S7 to have the best camera Samsung has ever created. Youngmin Nam, senior manager of the Global Product Planning, principal engineer Hwayoung Kang and senior engineers Youngsoo Bok and Beomjoon Kwon from the Camera R&D joined this interview.

Q. Why did you apply dual pixel technology? What are the limitations of the typical smartphone cameras existing today?

Youngmin Nam: What prompted us to develop the dual pixel technology was the consumer need. Some people say a camera is a device that handles light. But if you think about it, it would be more appropriate to say that a camera is a device that handles light and time. A camera should be good at controlling light to allow people to take a clear picture, and time to allow them to grasp the moment they want to. In this regard, Samsung has so far made its best efforts. For instance, we improved autofocus by applying a phase difference sensor for the first time in a smartphone.

Consumers, however, still wanted more. Some said that when they took a picture in a dark place, it wasn’t bright enough. The picture tended to be dark and unclear so people couldn’t photograph the moment in the way they wanted to.

Hwayoung Kang: We researched all the possible areas related to a camera where progress could be made, not only the sensors but also tools and software, before we chose to go with dual pixel. We reviewed almost all the latest technologies related to a smartphone and a camera and came to a conclusion that a way to show the most innovative effects was to build in a dual pixel sensor, which was entirely new hardware back then.

Q. What process did you go through before you applied a dual pixel sensor? What was the most difficult process that still sticks in your mind?

Kang: Since there was no example of dual pixel technology built into a smartphone, there was a big risk to using a new sensor. However, because a camera was one of the most important features in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, and dual pixel technology was a defining technology that determined the performance of this camera, we had a sense of responsibility to implement it in a proper way.

Youngsoo Bok: The image quality of a camera is hugely affected by the sensor and lens. In the case of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, as we built in a dual pixel sensor and a brighter new F1.7 lens, we faced new problems that didn’t exist before. For instance, we needed a new part that could collect and process information sent by a dual pixel sensor where there were two photodiodes in a pixel.

When it comes to image quality, in particular, even when a user sets the device to ‘Auto’ mode, settings are different in a smartphone camera depending on the condition under which a person uses a camera. Even under such varied settings and conditions, a camera should be able to provide the best image quality. As a new sensor and lens were built in, all the relevant processes had to be prepared from the ground up, right from the beginning.

Q. What efforts did you make to prove dual pixel technology internally?

Kang: This product was so special. Until the very last minute, we thought really hard about whether this solution was the most optimal one. Before this, I spent years researching a single sensor and thinking of how to develop it within its boundaries, but this time a dual pixel sensor was about introducing a wholly new technology. We were very careful to examine whether using a new sensor technology was the most advanced yet practical solution in terms of enhancing image quality and satisfying consumer needs.

Bok: From the beginning of this project, we thought of how to show the two strongest points of dual pixel technology: really fast autofocus, and bright and clear images in low-light conditions. So, we created a demonstration kit that could show image quality performance in comparison with the latest strategic products.

Nam: In terms of new technology and image quality, dual pixel technology provides a completely different level of product quality. But we were very worried about whether consumers could accept this technology. However, since engineers clearly demonstrated upgraded performance in low-light conditions, which consumers were eager to see, we carried on with conviction.

Q. What changes did the replacement of hardware bring about during the development?

Bok: In order to demonstrate the actual speed of autofocus, we can measure the time it takes and show it in quantitative terms. But for consumers, we thought it would be more understandable. We approach them with sensibility through actual comparison, not with specs. There was a need to show how fast our new product was compared to existing products.

That applies to not only autofocus but also picture quality in low-light conditions and even no-light conditions with 0 lux. The whole camera development team even carried DSLR cameras and a Galaxy S7 prototype, and searched for conditions where a user might actually use a camera.

Beomjoon Kwon: As we built in a dual pixel sensor and increased the speed of autofocus, burst mode became faster. As burst mode became faster, it subsequently led to more data to process when burst mode was used. So we needed to make efforts to improve the software in a way that could process data without placing a burden on the hardware.

Q. What difficulty did you have when you applied camera technology to mobile?

Kang: Even though dual pixel sensor was already built in cameras, building it in mobile was another challenge. This is because there was a huge difference in the size of the sensor itself. In previous years, however, Samsung had secured technology to keep a sensor at almost the same size while providing a higher number of pixels, and also had partners who could work together to build it. And we had expertise to handle smaller pixels. We were confident that we could make it if we were able to reduce the size of the existing pixels a bit more, building on the existing technological process and combining them together.

Q. How will building in dual pixel technology change the development of a smartphone camera?

Kang: We’re planning to focus on further improving the sophistication of dual pixel technology, and when this technology reaches near perfection, it could raise the possibility of building in the superb features of cameras, which have been thought of as impossible to be built in a smartphone. In other words, this could be seen as having established infrastructure in which a smartphone camera can further evolve.

Nam: Building in this dual pixel technology is an example of practical innovation. We tried to introduce what people really needed rather than showing off new features. We found a solution to satisfy these practical needs, and ultimately created a camera with which a user can conveniently use dual pixel technology and take a picture of whatever scene they want to at any moment.

Q. What made you include Motion Panorama? Any tip for users when taking a photo?

Nam: We enabled the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge to instantly take the best quality pictures with a dual pixel sensor and bright lens based on Samsung’s best expertise. After putting much thought into how to provide consumers with this new experience, we suggested a new way that broke down the barriers between photos and video. In fact, we wanted to provide a new experience in which a user could vividly remember the moment when they took a picture. Motion Panorama and Motion Photo are such examples.

We wanted to breathe life into the current Panorama mode and make it more vivid, so that people can enjoy a great view in a richer, more dynamic way.

Motion Photo is a feature that records a motion video of three seconds before you take a picture. You might simply think that you can videotape what you are doing when you take a photo. Imagine this: you take a photo of fireworks with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, but you miss the best moment. When you use Motion Photo, you can go back in time and choose and see the best moment you want, and you can even take a photo of the scene later on and save it.

Motion Photo and Motion Panorama provide a new experience of enjoying pictures, not just the moment when you take them. Using these two modes, while looking at a motion picture, you can touch the scene you want to see, tilt the screen, and have fun searching the video.

Q. What was difficult when you implemented Motion Panorama? How does its recording work?

Kwon: The most difficult part when developing the software was to make sure the new features did not overlap with existing ones, because the settings featured in a number of cameras were all very different. So we thought deeply of how to ensure a user could effectively feel a certain feature differently from others.

For Motion Photo, when you turn it on, a camera starts recording all the scenes even if you don’t press the shutter. And the device shows you only three seconds before you push the shutter. In such a case, a user might be concerned about power consumption or data processing arising from it. In order to address those concerns, we always considered how to make sure our device worked more efficiently. Furthermore, there was a long discussion between various departments to decide how many seconds before our device should show a motion picture.

Q. What made you include Hyperlapse? Any tip for users when taking a photo?

Nam: People often use a time-lapse feature when they need to take a lengthy video and watch it in a short period of time. Hyperlapse is a feature that evolves and fits this time-lapse feature into mobile usability. Hyperlapse doesn’t simply fix and compress time, but it analyzes video and records it in a way that lapses faster when there is less movement while recording it in a way that lapses more slowly when there is more movement. It makes the footage more understandable when people watch it. On top of that, it minimizes the camera from shaking when taking a picture.

Let’s imagine you visit a museum or a famous tourist attraction. You cannot videotape everything and it is difficult to videotape while you appreciate them with your eyes. In this case, however, all you have to do is just turn on Hyperlapse and carry the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge along with you. With Hyperlapse, you could even watch the footage of an entire amusement park in only one minute. Of course, we also provide the existing fixed time-lapse feature.

“When I first started out, no one thought I would make it because I looked so unusual compared to other models,” she says. “There had never been a top model who looked like me.”

But for people like Wek, arguably South Sudan’s most famous daughter, there are still barriers to be broken down.

A bloody civil war led her to flee her native country at age 14 and take refuge in the United Kingdom. Four years later she got her big break when a modelling scout discovered her in a South London park.

At the time, there were no supermodels like Wek on the scene. Her distinctive looks, typical of the Dinka people – the predominant ethnic group of South Sudan – seemed to be at odds with the fashion world’s idea of beauty.

But rewriting the history books is what Wek is all about.

It was not long before she was adorning the covers of fashion magazines like Vogue and Elle and designers around the world wanted her as the face of their brands.

Her ethos is clear, “Children should never think ‘I can’t do that,’ just because no one else like them is doing it,” she says. ““From my childhood in South Sudan to my unconventional ‘look’ in the fashion industry, I’ve faced many barriers to get where I am today. However, the relentless pursuit of my dreams helped me to defy these imposed limits and create meaningful progress within the fashion industry.”

When asked about her partnership with Samsung on the shoot, she says, “I appreciate Samsung’s status as a relentless innovator in their industry. They’re not afraid to be the first or to be a pioneer.”

With the release of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge on March 11, Samsung also released a 2016 version of its brand sound “Over the Horizon,” this time radically re-imagined by Swedish pop-funk group Dirty Loops. The new version is a fun and jazzy new take on the Galaxy’s signature sound.

“Dirty Loops’ music style is a mix of everything we’ve ever listened to, which is a lot actually,” said Jonah Nilsson, Dirty Loops’ lead singer and keyboardist. “So I think there is something in there for everybody to enjoy.”

Nilsson added, “Usually when we make songs we have a whole song with a lot of notes to play with but this time we only got six notes to play with. The ‘Over the Horizon’ song has been a lot of fun for us.”

To some extent, the Galaxy brand sound is unique in terms of the way people listen to it. After all, most people do not listen to a brand sound in quite the same way as they would, say, listen to their favorite songs.

“The biggest challenge with this project was going from the normal studio situation where you record for headphones or a big stereo system to instead recording for smartphone speakers,” said Henrik Linder, the act’s bassist. “It was quite a challenge.”

The track comes pre-loaded on all Galaxy S7 and S7 edge phones, so users can take a listen to it using the Music app. Samsung and Dirty Loops hope “Over the Horizon” new pop-fuelled sound will help to increase the sound’s appeal.

“My approach to mixing is a very musical one,” said Simon Petrén, the track’s producer and mastering engineer. “I’m a pianist myself, so I strive to find all those details and emphasize them. And in Dirty Loops’ case, you can tell that is a lot of detail.”

For some artists, labels like “painter,” “musician,” and “fashion designer” are a comfortable fit. But for people like Henrik Vibskov, they are merely constraints.

He is a leading light in the fashion industry – musicians such as Björk, M.I.A., LCD Soundsystem and Franz Ferdinand have proudly sported his designs. However; Henrik is not content to simply clothe music’s biggest stars. When he is not designing new collections, Henrik keeps himself occupied as drummer with his own project Mountain Yorokobu, signed to Fake Diamond Records, and also toured with Trentemøller.

The creativity doesn’t stop there. Henrik is also an award-winning installation artist, an art professor and a prominent figure in the “New Nordic Movement” of media gurus.

In fact, he believes that constant reinvention is at the heart of the creative process. When asked about what pushes him to create such a diverse portfolio of work, Henrik remarked, “I am always inspired by people who challenge themselves to go out there and try something new, to challenge perception and create progress.”

“In the brave new world of multi-discipline art creation, technology can be a powerful tool. If you can make technology as mobile as you are, then the sky is the limit.”

In the Samsung’s flagship range, Henrik believes he has found a device that truly embodies what he aims to achieve and empowers his multifaceted lifestyle. “Samsung is motivated to redefine what a phone can do,” he says.

With the Galaxy S7 in hand, new-school artists like Henrik explain they can enjoy not only creative freedom, but also the flexibility needed to break down interdisciplinary boundaries.

In particular, Henrik says that the Gear VR and Gear 360, compatible with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, have opened up a new channel of ideas and creativity for him.

“It’s a completely new way of thinking, seeing and experiencing the world both near and far from home,” says Henrik. ”It allows me to fully immerse myself in an entirely sensorial experience that stirs my creative senses. I’m interested to see how I can incorporate this progressive technology into my art and design.”

For Kelli Samuelson, carving new niches has become second nature.

Life has thrown her plenty of curveballs, but in overcoming them, Kelli has ventured into unchartered territory for female riders and set the stage for other barrier-breaking females.

An aspiring professional with dreams of competing at the top level of the sport, a hip injury found late in life has given her some serious setbacks. The injury required reconstructive surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation that put her dreams on hold.

Undaunted, however, she used her time away from the road to do something she truly believed in –finding a place for women in the traditionally male-dominated cycling world.

As the team owner of LA Sweat, the groundbreaking California-based women’s road cycling team, she says she knew right from the start that her quest to create a community for female bicycle enthusiasts would be fraught with challenges. After all, for so many, cycling clubs are very much a man’s world.

Yet she refused to be daunted by the scale of what she wanted to do. “I wanted to do it differently,” she explains. “Rather than waiting for someone else to fix it, I decided to do it myself.”

This was the thinking that spurred the creation of LA Sweat in 2015. Within a year of its establishment, the club’s roster already boasts Northern California’s 2015 Best-All-Around Rider and a two-time Mardis de Lachine winner, as well as scores more passionate female cyclists.

Kelli said “To me, breaking barriers means being who you are and not accepting the limits imposed on you by daring to defy anything that stands in the way of what you want to achieve! I refuse to be defined by a single label but rather choose the freedom of following whatever inspires my passion.”

She said technology enables her to go beyond boundaries because it allows her to capture and share what makes her feel limitless and can also inspire others to break through their own barriers, no matter who they are.

When asked what she especially liked about Galaxy S7, she said “When you spend your day on a bike, the world rolls by quite quickly. That’s why I am especially obsessed with the super-fast autofocus on the Galaxy S7’s camera. No matter my RPM, I know that it will capture me crossing the finish line in perfect clarity! Plus, it does the same even on late night rides.”

To let the world know about the launch of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, Samsung has been putting on many high-profile and exciting events around the world, from the “Beyond Barriers” Galaxy Unpacked event  at MWC 2016 to Samsung Experience Stores and Galaxy Studios that opened around the world on March 11. But in Ireland, the new Galaxy devices made an especially spectacular entrance: by jetpack.

On March 9, Nick Macomber—aka JetpackMan—flew by jet pack over Dublin’s Ha’Penny Bridge, landing on a pontoon on River Liffey. Once he landed, Nick presented a brand new Galaxy S7 to Irish model Thalia Heffernan. It was an entrance as exciting and unconventional as the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge themselves.

At one Samsung store in Paris, more than 100 people were waiting in line at 7 a.m., eager to buy the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

The first person to buy a Galaxy S7 edge at one Paris store. He said he had been using a Samsung D500 phone for the last 12 years.

More than 200 people waited in line to buy the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge and experience the Samsung Gear VR at one T-Mobile store in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Over the weekend, more than 60,000 people visited a Samsung popup store at the Westfield Shopping Centre in London, trying out the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

Throughout the weekend, energetic crowds filled the Galaxy Studio at Tianhe Square, Guangzhou, China.

One may experience irrepressible excitement when opening up the packaging on a shiny new product. In fact, the anticipation felt during an unboxing experience is often just as strong as the emotions felt when one is using a product for the first time.

For the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung Electronics has taken care to create a memorable unboxing experience. Attention to detail was applied not just in crafting the smartphones – the packaging also got a full makeover.

The new design sees users open the box as if they were opening a book. This means the smartphone is only gradually revealed, delivering a novel, intriguing and somewhat nostalgic experience.

The box, which features a sleek black and blue color scheme, is designed with simplicity and elegance in mind, just like the device inside.

Senior Designer Hyun Jee Lim, creator of the new packaging design, shared the messages Samsung hopes to convey through the new packaging.

Q: What was your principle goal during the design process for the new packaging?

Hyun Jee Lim: Our aim was to create a package that best represents Samsung’s design identity, as well as the elegance the product embodies. Since we redefined the exclusive brand image of the Galaxy series through the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, we attempted to align the package with the same image.

In fact, we strove to apply the brand image throughout the entire experience, from the Galaxy Unpacked invitation and the event itself, to the key visual components of the device and the product packaging. It was all done as part of an effort to deliver a seamless experience to our consumers.

Q: What aspects you most consider when you design the packaging?

Hyun Jee Lim: To represent the completeness of the device, we selected black as the packaging’s main color. We then incorporated blue, Samsung’s heritage color, into the design to improve the overall quality of the package. To enhance the effect, and to boost usability, we also designed the box so that it could be opened like a book.

Q: The book concept is an interesting one. How did you come up with it?

Hyun Jee Lim: We wanted to create a truly unique and classic package—one with which our consumers can encounter an intriguing experience from the moment they first interact with our product. The book-like design not only does this, it also adds an emotional element.

Q: Considering the box contains such a high-tech product, why did you decide to include such seemingly analog packaging designs?

Hyun Jee Lim: The juxtaposition between digital and analog might seem unusual, considering we live in a highly digitized society. However, as much as we rely on cutting-edge technology to get through the day, we are also sentimental beings filled with a longing for the past.

The package satisfies this desire by conveying a sense of familiarity and aesthetic sensibility, even though it contains a high-tech device. The design also represents Samsung as a transformational business, one that is continuously evolving.

Q: What materials were used in the packaging and why did you choose them?

Hyun Jee Lim: The packaging is carefully crafted, with black paper embellished with textured micro-patterns. This sleek, modern design helps the brand experience become tangible in consumers’ hands.

Q: The inner packaging is also different to that used in previous Galaxy models. Why is that?

Hyun Jee Lim: We aspired to create the best possible design, right down to the very smallest of details. We wanted consumers to be able to fully perceive the efforts that went into the birth of the product as a whole.

Q: What value did you, as a designer, want to personally communicate to consumers through the package design?

Hyun Jee Lim: A product’s packaging conveys a very important first impression to the customer. I wanted not to just satisfy people’s expectations, I actually wanted to surpass them. I tried to add a touch of ardor and confidence. I was hoping to use the packaging to convey the essence of the Galaxy S series and Samsung’s unique design identity.

A Simpler Design for You, a Highly Complex Approach for Us

The new Galaxy S7 edge front glass is designed with 3D thermoforming technology. The entire dimensions, including the tempered sides of the phone, were molded into one coherent whole. The tempered glass was slowly shaped in immensely high temperatures, a highly complex technique that is not for the faint of heart. This new form serves to enhance the grip, but also the subtle nuance of light that hit and reflects on the device gives it a dimension and depth unseen in a communication device until now.

3D thermoforming is the edge of the blade in technological advancement and combining design with such innovations is key. We don’t have the space to fully explain the complex processes needed to craft such a contour that unifies both glass and metal, nor do you need to understand such technicalities to fully experience the new Galaxy S7 edge. All you need is to pick up the device and feel the difference in your hands.

All That Needs to Stand Out is You

Right where it should be, but hidden flush in the contours as though hidden. The side button and rear camera of the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are incredibly subtle. What you have is a continuous fluid body that isn’t disrupted by the button or lens jutting out. We’ve also made a water and dust resistant body without scarifying the design by covering USB and ear jack with rubber. Without re-engineering the wheel, we’ve refined the status quo toward a perfect form. For the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge we chose usability and comfort instead to enable the camera and buttons to be unobtrusive. Now, all that needs to stand out is you.

Color and Material – Everything’s a Bit Deeper

A natural illumination and depth devoid of artificial treatment — four colors were developed to embody this quality: Black Onyx, Gold Platinum, White Pearl, and Silver Titanium. These hues glitter and shimmer as if illuminated from inside the glass surface. Such effects are achieved with an optical layer process that applies film on the surface of the curved glass.

Black Onyx, one of the newly developed colors, applies a unique pattern that fractures light into a unique ebony hue found only on the S7; it enriches the depth of the transparent glass material. Gold Platinum, is reminiscent of smokey quartz; Silver Titanium mixes white and silver for a stern yet vivid feel. Whichever you choose, each color affects the glass material in a distinct and unique way.

Even Easy to Miss Details Weren’t Missed

The first impression packaging and accessories of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were not far from the designer’s desk. The sturdy embossed black box hints at the new experience of touch that awaits you, and as it opens up like a book the revealing of the device is a new experience in itself; intuitive, yet undoubtedly premium in the classic sense without even having touched the phone yet.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge accessories follow a consistent design approach. In this way, you can literally see the underlying concept as well as the effort put in by each designer to develop each accessory and item to a stringent level of quality. Having said that, each of the 10 items (8 for the case, 2 for power) retain a unique look that was developed through collaboration and cooperation between the developers and designers.

Establishing Sincerity: A Life-Centered UX

We’re also confident that with the introduction of third party developers into this arena the floodgates of possibilities have been opened.

Won’t Let You Miss a Beat

The Cross App lets you access different functions even with an application already open on the screen. For example, messages, emails, memos can be accessed with a viewer window that pops up in front of the app in use. Also images, videos, music files, memos, schedule and contact info can be attached with the Attach Sheet interface while all that is going on. Video files can be accessed simply by tapping on the icon in the message app without leaving the screen, while the camera and photos can be taken or sent without even accessing the apps themselves.

Samsung Pay has quickly become the most widely accepted mobile payment system due to its unique combination of NFC technology and magnetic secure transmission (MST), ensuring it works nearly anywhere that accepts credit cards.

Wireless Charger IC:

Following Samsung’s development of high-speed wired charging, now the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge feature fast charging wirelessly.

HRM Sensor: 

The heart rate sensor enables users to monitor their physical information, which can be checked through the S Health app. In addition, the front-facing camera of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge lets you take selfies using your heart rate monitor sensor.

USB Connector:

The new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge smartphones are IP68 certified, meaning they are dust resistant and water resistant for up to 1.5 meters deep for 30 minutes. To accomplish this, all the ports, including the USB charging terminal, had to be made from anticorrosive materials like nickel and platinum, with a Gore lining to ensure the elements stay out.

Front Camera:

The 5MP camera has been enhanced to an aperture F1.7 lens, making it better than ever at capturing selfies in low-light conditions.

Rear Camera:

The camera in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge features an innovative Dual Pixel sensor, which uses every pixel in the sensor for phase detection, and an aperture F1.7 lens. Both the sensor and the lens allow the camera to capture sharper images faster, even in lower-light conditions, making it the most versatile smartphone camera yet.

Battery:

Both the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge feature larger and more powerful batteries, so people can enjoy almost a full day of using the device without worrying about running out of power. The Galaxy S7 battery is 3,000 mAh and the Galaxy S7 edge is 3,600 mAh—enough for people to watch an entire, 13-episode season of their favorite TV series on a single charge.

Polaris-inspired celestial patterns projected on the walls created a dreamy atmosphere for attendees as they entered the venue.

The event began with a video featuring paparazzi-style shots of the event’s guests, and was followed by the screening of a Samsung television commercial that introduced the latest additions to the company’s Galaxy S line-up.

DJ Koh, President of Samsung Electronics Mobile Communications Business, then took to the stage to introduce the highly anticipated products.

Koh emphasized Samsung’s commitment to “grow together with China” and addressed the importance of the market. He also made mention of the company’s efforts to create features designed specifically for Chinese consumers.

Smooth yet spritely, “Over the Horizon” has greeted Galaxy owners for five years—always familiar, and yet changing every year.

Evolving with Each New Galaxy S Series Smartphone

Originally composed by Samsung’s Principal Designer Josh Joongsam Yun in 2011 for the Galaxy S II, “Over the Horizon” has evolved over the years, getting lighter in 2012, and getting a tinge of rock and electric guitar in 2013 and 2014.

For 2015, “Over the Horizon” went orchestral for the Galaxy S6, as Jamie Christopherson led a recording of the tune in Nashville with the 40-piece Nashville String Machine, which was then mixed by Mixing Engineer Al Schmitt at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.

Going Loopy for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

Since starting in 2008, Swedish trio Dirty Loops has won critical acclaim from around the world for their creative and fresh approach pop, infusing it with jazz, funk and a host of influences. And now Samsung has collaborated with them to reimagine an exciting new version of “Over the Horizon”.

Known for hosting the must-attend events of the festival and offering Galaxy owners with unique rewards and exclusive access, Samsung is bringing new activations and programming to the festival this year. For the first time, consumers at SXSW can purchase the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge at the retail pop-up within the Samsung Studio. As part of their purchase, they will receive the ultimate festival bundle turning their phone into an all-access pass to special programming and events.

“This year’s SXSW Interactive is especially exciting because we get to celebrate the retail debut of our newest products – the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge – along with our entire galaxy of services, products and experiences,” said Marc Mathieu, chief marketing officer at Samsung Electronics America. “We are continuously trying to up the game with rewarding our loyal fans and owners, and this year at SXSW it’s no different.  Our customers will have the hottest ticket in town just by owning a Galaxy smartphone, and we can’t wait to show Austin what it means to live the Galaxy life.”

Throughout the festival, attendees will have a number of opportunities to interact with Samsung and the latest devices. Below is a sampling of what’s in store.

Living the #GalaxyLife at SXSW

During SXSW Interactive, Galaxy owners stopping by the Samsung Studio can enjoy premium services including complimentary rides throughout Austin. Festivalgoers will also have the opportunity to use Samsung Pay – the official mobile payment of the 2016 SXSW Festival – at numerous vendors and merchants throughout Austin including the Samsung Pay Vending Machine which will offer great prizes including the Gear VR, gift cards and more at extreme discounts when using Samsung Pay.

Unique programming at Samsung Studio

Throughout the festival, the Samsung Studio will host a wide range of daily programing including an inside look at the next installment of “GONE” from Skybound Entertainment, Wevr and Samsung, with more to be announced later.

In addition, consumers will have the opportunity to check out the Gear VR Experience and demo roller coaster content via Samsung’s 4D VR chairs that offer motion simulation to create an immersive sensory experience.

The Samsung Retail Pop-Up in partnership with Best Buy will be open for business where consumers will have the opportunity to get hands-on with the newest innovations, purchase Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, and receive product support. Consumers who purchase a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge device will receive the ultimate ticket to attend every Samsung event throughout the festival.

Located at 333 E 2nd Street in Austin, TX, the Samsung Studio will be open daily from 11 AM CT – 6 PM CT, March 11-15. For consumers not attending SXSW Interactive, Samsung 837 – the company’s flagship experiential center and cultural hub located in the heart of New York’s Meatpacking District – will be livestreaming the action throughout the festival.

Samsung SmartThings

During SXSW Interactive, Samsung will also showcase its new innovations for the connected home for festivalgoers with the Samsung SmartThings Airstream. This experiential pop up will be outfitted with Samsung SmartThings products in engaging ways, including TVs, audio speakers and mobile devices and will travel throughout central downtown Austin. Each day will kick off with an open house at the airstream where attendees will be able to enjoy an entertaining and interactive experience through product demos and activities.
